The forecast explained

A good day for a battery looks like this

Overnight, power is cheap, so the battery fills up. At breakfast the price climbs and the battery runs the house instead. Around midday the sun pushes the wholesale price below zero, so the battery charges again and is paid to do it.

Then the evening peak arrives. By 6pm the price has jumped to 142 cents and the battery sells to the grid. On this sample day that sale earned A$7.40, and running the house through the morning and evening peaks saved another A$3.10. Together that is A$10.50 for the day.

A target, not a guarantee. Savings depend on your battery, tariff and usage. Our target is 25 to 40% off your bill, and it is a target rather than a promise.

Wholesale price across the sample day, with the battery's mode shaded behindPrice stays below 10 cents overnight while the battery charges and holds, rises to 31 cents at 7am while the battery powers the house, goes negative around midday while the battery charges from solar, then spikes to 142 cents at 6pm while the battery sells to the grid, before easing back overnight.ChargeHoldPower the houseChargeHoldSell to the gridPower the house0c50c100c150c12am6am12pm6pm142c at 6pm, sell-3c at 11am, paid to charge

How it works

Five steps, repeated 288 times a day

Like a weather bureau for your battery, we watch, forecast, and then act on it.

  1. Step 1

    Watch

We read the live wholesale price, the weather, and how your home uses power.

  2. Step 2

    Forecast

We predict the next few hours: your solar, your usage and the price of power.

  3. Step 3

    Decide

Every five minutes we choose: charge, hold, power the house, or sell to the grid.

  4. Step 4

    Act

Your battery follows the plan automatically. Nothing for you to press.

  5. Step 5

    Report

Each morning you see what the battery did and what it earned.

Who it is for

Good conditions for Watt iQ

Watt iQ suits homes where these four things are true.

  • You already own a home battery that can be controlled remotely.
  • You live in ACT, NSW, QLD, SA or TAS.
  • You are with Localvolts, or willing to switch to a retailer that passes wholesale prices through.
  • You want the battery to work harder without you lifting a finger.

Questions

Things families ask us

Will I lose my backup power?

No. You choose how much of the battery to keep for a blackout, for example 30 percent, and Watt iQ never dips below it, no matter how high the price goes.

Do I need a new battery or new hardware?

No. Watt iQ is software that talks to the battery you already have. If your battery can be controlled remotely, we can usually work with it.

What does it cost?

Subscriptions are expected to start at A$25 a month, with final pricing confirmed before launch. The aim is for a typical household to earn back many times that.

Is it hard to set up?

You set your goals once, connect your battery and switch your electricity plan to Localvolts. From there Watt iQ runs on its own and shows you what it saved each month.
